Stone Cairn Piles Between Pebbly And Ellis Beaches Cairns Queensland by Joan Stratton - A delightful brightly coloured and textured painted display of the man-made Cairn stone structures located on the Cairns northern beaches between Wangetti and Ellis beaches on the coastal drive to Port Douglas in Far North, Queensland, Australia.

I love the shape and form of these wonderfully balanced rocks, look at them in the surrounding scene I feel at peace and meditative. The erecting of these stone cairns, in the area, began approx. a decade ago, during storm surges and very high tides they get knocked over but then begin to appear again.

A cairn is a man-made pile (or stack) of stones. The word cairn comes from the Scottish Gaelic: càrn. Cairn structures, since pre-historic times, have been used for a broad variety of purposes; as landmarks, burial monuments, defence, hunting, ceremonial purposes, location markers.
