Description
Weary Dunlop Memorial Statue Benalla Australian Flag by Joan Stratton - A black and white painted artwork of the Weary Dunlop Memorial Sculpture, with a ghostly image of the Australian flag, located in the Rose Gardens, Bridge Street, Benalla, Victoria, Australia. The monument is dedicated to the memory of Sir Edward Weary Dunlop, solider, surgeon and war hero was born in Benalla, 1907. He was know as a man of deep personal integrity and was renowned for his leadership while being held prisoner by the Japanese during World War II. His nickname Weary, was a reference to his surname - tired like a Dunlop tyre.
1942, Dunlop was in command of the No.1 Allied General Hospital at Bandoeng, Java when the Japanese invaded and he became a prisoner of war. Transferred to the Burma-Thailand Raliway in Singapore, Dunlop continued to work as a doctor saving many men from the harsh conditions of camp life. The sculpture is by Louis Laumen, the memorial comprises of a dramatic scene where two men assist a weak, emaciated figure. One of the plaques is inscribed with Donald Stuart's memory of Weary Dunlop: "When despair and death reached out to us Weary Dunlop stood fast, a light house of sanity in a universe of madness and suffering."
