Liapari Island Fishing In The Lagoon by Joan Stratton - A modern painted abstract looking out to the tropical reflective lagoon from the small island of Liapari, in the Western Province in the Solomon Islands where two young girls are in the water fishing for dinner. The older of the girls is in a traditional dugout canoe fishing while her younger sister is wading out to the canoe. I well remember the day I snorkelled on this shallow reef in the lagoon and was very surprised by the large number of moray eels only a few centimetres from my face.
Liapari Island borders the southern end of Vella Lavella Island. It is just 14 miles from Gizo, the second largest city in the Solomons, we travelled from Gizo to Liapari, in 1989, via a long dugout canoe with a motor on the back. The motor stopped halfway there and the fellow we were with, jumped into the water and fixed it from there!

I began my working career in Melbourne, as a trainee in graphic art, technical drawings and drafting for a mining and engineering company. With the diversity of work available to me, I gained vast experience with all manner of mediums prior to the advent of computers. In the mid '80s, as a side-line to my permanent employment, I designed and prepared artwork for record covers (Albums, Eps), promotional ads and flyers for rock bands that marketed their music independently.
