I is For Ibis by Joan Stratton - A lifelike illustration of a wading bird, the Australian white ibis (threskiornis molucca) on a white background with a watercolour feathering of red to highlight its black head and long downward curved bill. This detailed drawing took me about a week of long days drawing and is part of the Grow With Joe Children’s Books – Minnamoolka Series Book 4 Kia’s Animal Alphabet.
Minnamoolka Series of Books are available via Amazon.
Australian White Ibis (and Straw-necked Ibis) are sometimes called ‘the farmers’ friend’, due to their habit of flocking into areas afflicted by plagues of locusts and gorging on the ravaging hoards of insects. In urban areas, however, where many Ibis scrounge for a living by scavenging at rubbish tips and in city parks, and their plumage becomes soiled by refuse, they are sometimes disparagingly referred to as ‘tip turkeys’ or 'bin chickens' (from birdlife.org.au).

Welcome to Paintings By Joan - Art & Design By Joan P Stratton. I live in the tropical far north, Cape York, Queensland, Australia. My beautiful home and country is the inspiration for my art. I began my working career in Melbourne, as a trainee in graphic art, technical drawings and drafting for a mining and engineering company. With the diversity of work available to me, I gained vast experience with all manner of mediums prior to the advent of computers. In the mid '80s, as a side-line to my permanent employment, I designed and prepared artwork for record covers (Albums, Eps), promotional ads and flyers for rock bands that marketed their music independently. I see myself as a mixed media artist, I love every medium and they all...
