Panguna Mountain Climb Bougainville Island by Joan Stratton - A modern abstract view of a rainy night during the wet season in 1986 showing the low lying clouds in the mountain range as you drive up the mountain to Panguna township and mine, where I worked and lived in the 1980s. I vividly remember the wonderful times spent on this beautiful Island.
Bougainville Island, is the easternmost island of Papua New Guinea (PNG), in the Solomon Sea, southwestern Pacific and located near the northern end of the chain of Solomon Islands. Panguna is a town and a (now decommissioned) copper mine on Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea. It was owned and operated by Bougainville Copper Ltd, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto. Beginning operations in 1972, the company hired thousands of workers from all over the world. By the end of its operations on May 15, 1989, when the mine was closed because of an armed uprising on the island, it was the largest open-cut mine in the world.
