Mission River Shore by Joan Stratton - The patterns of Weipa, Queensland, Australia. Bauxite rocks on the shore of the Mission River. Mission river is a large salt water tidal river, the mouth opens to the Gulf of Carpentaria.
Weipa is located on the western side of Cape York Peninsula, approx. 820 kms (507 mi)north of Cairns and 2,471 km (1,535 mi) of Brisbane, it is located closer to PNG's Port Moresby than the Queensland capital of Brisbane.
Weipa is just south of Duyfken Point, a location which is now agreed to be the first recorded point of European contact with the Australian continent by the Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon, on his ship the Duyfken, in 1606.
Weipa is the largest town on the Cape with approx. 3500-4000 people.
