Metallic Moment Kingfisher Mangrove And The Southern Cross by Joan Stratton - A surreal steampunk themed illustration of a metallic, mechanical mangrove tree where a metal kingfisher bird is perched on the roots, he has just caught his supper as the red sun sets and the southern cross rises in the fiery evening sky in Weipa, Cape York, Queensland, Australia.

For me, this artwork is symbolic in its representation of my unique community, it’s diversity and culture;
• The metallic steampunk look represents mining, industry, business and growth.
• The mangrove tree and the kingfisher both represent our flora and fauna and easy going lifestyle, living by the sea.
• The South Cross is uniquely Australian.
• The rich reds and oranges and the design of the background represents our culture and diversity, the red earth and the sometimes brilliant red sky in our many wondrous sunsets over the sea. The tracks are the people and they are all drawn to the centre which is the community and like the sun it is our life blood.
