Description
Im OK Are You OK 2of2 by Joan Stratton - A woman lays back, on a couch, wanting to disappear into the very fabric she sits upon, unseen, unnoticed, she has the weight on the world collapsing about her, she is exhausted, tormented, and lost, behind her is a painting of a happy smiling face. A modern semi-abstract portrait art piece, of an interpretation of mental illness in the form of depression and anxiety, a state of mind that those who don't or haven't suffered, struggle to fully understand how this state of mind can control, overwhelm, cause fear, loathing, flight, remove motivation, decrease self-worth, take one into the deep, dark, depths. A common statement/question from those who don't fully understand; Why don't you just get on with it! Just snap out of it! IF it was only that easy.
Starting with one of my charcoal sketches from the 90's, then digital blending a mixture of digital manipulation and drawing. Part of a series of PaintDigi-Blending.

I have dealt with depression and anxiety for over 20 years, and now I watch my daughter struggle with almost crippling anxiety and panic attacks. The woman in this picture is me... or at the very least, someone I used to be. I'm better now, with meds and therapy ... and lots of art! But yeah, there is no "snap out of it" -- that's not really a thing. Thanks for having the courage to draw and post this. L/F
Joan Stratton replied:
Lori, thank you for sharing. I am so happy for you that you have found your own peace and hope your daughter can also find what she needs to help her though. That person on the couch was me too! It's a long hard journey out of those dark places that the mind takes us to but well worth the struggle to reach for the light and so much easier if we have people who understand and care, helping us through :)
