Engine Trouble Gizo to Liapari Solomon Islands by Joan Stratton - A painted piece of a local family travelling between islands but they are having engine trouble with their canoe. Looking from our canoe as we stopped to see if we could lend a hand in the waters of Western Province in the Solomon Islands. It wasn't long after that we had similar issues :(
Liapari Island borders the southern end of Vella Lavella Island. It is just 14 miles from Gizo, the second largest city in the Solomons, we travelled from Gizo to Liapari, in 1989, via a long dugout canoe with a motor on the back.
For the sailors there are dozens of sandy and coral island anchorages and diving spots close to Liapari, including Kennedy Island (where the future President swam to after being shipwrecked during World War II).
