Cairns Beaches Queensland Stone Cairn Rustic 2 of 2 by Joan Stratton - A delightful rustic painted display of the man-made Cairn stone structures located on the Cairns northern beaches between Wangetti and Ellis beaches on the coastal drive to Port Douglas in Far North, Queensland, Australia.
I love the shape and form of these wonderfully balanced rocks, when I look at them in the surrounding scene I feel at peace and meditative. The erecting of these stone cairns, in the area, began approx. a decade ago, during storm surges and very high tides they get knocked over but then begin to appear again.
A cairn is a man-made pile (or stack) of stones. The word cairn comes from the Scottish Gaelic: càrn. Cairn structures, since pre-historic times, have been used for a broad variety of purposes; as landmarks, burial monuments, defence, hunting, ceremonial purposes, location markers.

I began my working career in Melbourne, as a trainee in graphic art, technical drawings and drafting for a mining and engineering company. With the diversity of work available to me, I gained vast experience with all manner of mediums prior to the advent of computers.
