Baby Flatback Turtle Red Light Ray by Joan Stratton - A wonderfully dramatic black and white with a splash of colour and a flash of red light artwork of a baby flatback turtle making its way from the nesting sites, over the many seashells to the seashore to catch a wave out to sea at Pormpuraaw, Cape York, Queensland, Australia.
This series of flatback turtle hatchlings are very special as my daughter worked with the local Indigenous Rangers in Pormpuraaw to ensure some of the turtle eggs from this clutch made it through to maturity. Their mother had unfortunately laid the clutch on the beach, instead of further up on the rise, which makes the clutch hard to find and out of harms way as on Cape York people drive on the beaches to their fishing spots and the local indigenous people eat turtle eggs (they are considered a delicacy).
Flatback turtles live in the shallow, soft-bottomed sea beds away from reefs in the northern coastal regions of Australia and Papua New Guinea. It is believed that the females only nest on beaches within Australia, with the largest nesting concentration on the north-eastern Gulf of Carpentaria and Western Torres Strait. Other rookeries in the Gulf of Carpentaria are in the Wellesley Islands and the Western Gulf of Carpentaria. This population of flatback turtles nests all year round with the peak of nesting activity mid year. This little fellow will end up growing to about 76 - 96 cm (30 - 38 inches) in length and will weigh from 70 - 90 kg (154 - 198 lb).
